The journal describes an 1867 trip from Minnesota to Oregon with a party led by P. B. Davy. The route from St. Cloud went overland to Fort Abercrombie where they joined a government train and traveled to Fort Stevenson, Fort Buford, Capt. Fisk's route, Fort Benton, the Mullan Road, Helena, Missoula, Coeur d'Alene River, Spokane Bridge, Kentucky Road, Snake River, and Walla Walla. They continued by the ships Idaho and Wilson G. Hunt to Portland.

Lueg, born in Prussia, came to the United States in 1861 and served in the Civil War as a member of the 21st New York Regiment Volunteers.
